Principal Warder Piesse.

On the night of the 4th. instant I was night

Orderly Officer. I took over at 6 p.m. All was then correct. My

duties included paying particular attention to specially watched

prisoners. There were 14 such in the Gaol that night, one of whom

was prisoner 8871 Wong Cheuk who was located in 23 cell, C 1 ward,

next to the adjudication room. The rule is generally understood

to mean that they should be visited every two hours. I visited 23

cell at 6.20, 12.15, 2.35 and 4.10. Each time I visited the cell

(23) every thing appeared in order. I saw that the lid of tue

night soil bucket was leaning against the outer wall. I looked at

it specially to see that it was a wooden case one as "special

watches" are not allowed iron ones. There is nothing unusual in

the lid being against the wall and I did not consider it

suspicious. I saw the prisoner's head on all my visits except the

last. I cannot say that I saw his head on my last visit. Sher

Singh did not come to the adjudication room to call me. I went

out at 4.10 of my own accord. I went all over the Caol and returned

to the entrance hall acout 4.48. I wake the Guards in the Guard

room and posted them in their places. About 5.05 when coming up the entrance hall steps I noticed a white patch outside cell 23.

I went there and found a hole through the wall. I rushed inside

and opened the cell and found the prisoner gone. The blanket was

arranged over some bricks and sand-pox, and the washing basin to simulate a sleeping man. Other uricks were piled in the NEXX

rear corner of the cell where they could not be seen from outside.

There was a hole in the outer wall just big enough for a slim

man to squeeze through. I ran to the Police Charge Roan and told

the Police of the escape. The I send word to the Chief Warder, and

meanwhile searched the yards. I entered visits in the night

orderly officer's report book viz.:- 6.20, 8.40, 10.40. 12.15,
